Speed Test
Check your internet speed in one click.
Speed Test lives in your Chrome toolbar. Click the icon, press Start test, and in about 20 seconds you see how fast your connection really is. You can close the window while it runs: the test keeps going and the result waits for you.
What it measures
Download
How fast data reaches you: streaming, downloads, opening pages.
Upload
How fast you send data: video calls, cloud backups, sharing files.
Ping
How long a signal takes to reach the server and come back, in milliseconds. Lower is better for calls and games.
Jitter
How much ping jumps around during the test. A low number means a steady connection.

Download and upload in Mbps, ping and jitter in milliseconds. Past tests stay in the history.
Your data
- The test runs on the open servers of Measurement Lab (M-Lab). M-Lab publishes every result together with your IP address as open data, see the M-Lab privacy policy.
- Your test history is kept only in this browser. We never receive it.

- The extension asks for no special permissions.
Questions
How long does a test take?
About 20 seconds: first download, then upload. Ping and jitter are measured during the download.
Can I close the window during a test?
Yes. The test runs in the background and finishes on its own. Open the window again to see the result.
Why is my result different from other speed tests?
Each service uses its own servers and its own method. Speed Test measures over a single connection to a nearby M-Lab server. Services that open several connections at once often show higher numbers on fast lines.
Is there a limit on tests?
M-Lab limits how many tests one network can run within a few hours. If you reach it, the window tells you, and you can test again later.
